Trent Freeman of Kansas City, Kan., and Kate Beckett of Kansas City, Mo., are partners in this unique pottery business. Freeman uses a 16th Century Japanese firing technique that has been modernized. He will demonstrate it during the festival. He heats the pots to 1900 degrees in an hour. “The glaze is still molten when he removes it from the kiln,” he said. “We reduce the oxygen by sealing it up with sawdust. It cuts off the air,” resulting in the copper effect.
